Ground Penetrating Radar

Seldom do we know what lies beneath our feet...

Industrial Applications
Plant sites and industrial facilities are large sites full of activity. Safety is a number one concern, and rightly so. These facilities tend to be the kind of place where small oversights lead to major problems. Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) can prevent some potential problems from reaching fruition, and can help predict the final outcome of others.

Utility Locating
Maverick Inspection Ltd. uniquely combines a full function GPR department with an excellent E.M. line locating system in order to locate and identify a large number of underground facilities including:

  • Power Cables
  • Data/communication and control cables
  • Utilities including natural gas and propane lines
  • Process lines
  • Cathodic Protection Systems, and line connected to CPS
  • Metallic and non metallic lines including HDPE, AC/Ductile, Fibreglass, PVC and ABS
  • Locate line failures by imaging the failures with our Remote Visual Testing, and then using the camera as a locate point.

Do not issue a Ground Disturbance Permit without knowing what lies beneath your feet.

Concrete Engineering
Maverick Inspection Ltd. uses Ground-penetrating Radar in place of X-ray to locate objects and identify construction techniques used in concrete slabs. GPR produces no radiation, and is safe to work around without evacuations. GPR can be used to update older drawings, and provide a great deal of information related to:

  • Concrete thickness analysis
  • Rebar spacing, and placement
  • Void Detections
  • Conduit locating
  • Provides information on suspended or on-grade slabs
  • Works on walls too!

Critical Lifts
60 tonne or 600 tonne? What is the cost of an accident due to poor footing? Maverick Inspection Ltd. can inexpensively gather data, and generate planview maps showing signs of potential subsurface failure before an incident can occur.

Moisture saturation, contamination, shear plains, sloughing and other subsurface movements can all be detected through the use of GPR.

Pre-construction Planning & Predictive Maintenance
Have a job coming up which may require more knowledge of the subsurface than you currently have? Don’t know about which lines might be running under the newly planned building? Perhaps moving a building by a meter or two could save a few hundred thousand dollars in excavations, trenching or even repairs? Have a line locate and GPR scan performed before you break ground to see if perhaps the way you plan to do things might not quite be the best way to do them.

Void Detection
In addition to critical crane lifts, other installations may require void detections beneath concrete slabs, or surrounding utilities such as fire water lines. Maverick Inspection Ltd. has employed Ground-penetrating Radar (GPR) in many situations to locate subsurface voiding. One example might be to locate which section of a charged water line may be leaking. Since GPR can locate the void caused by the water washout long before the void extends to the surface, we enable safe, effective, early repairs.

Contamination plume detection
Similar to void detection, Ground-penetrating Radar used by Maverick Inspection Ltd. is capable of imaging the altered soil conditions surrounding spills and contaminations. We can delineate the boundaries and help to select locations for monitoring wells, as well as guide cleanup efforts. We are capable of working on active plant sites without the need to evacuate large areas. We can work in farmer’s fields without affecting their crops. We can work in many weather conditions, at all times of the year.

This is a partial list of common applications we have performed at Maverick Inspection Ltd. Ground-penetrating radar has a multitude of additional applications, which are limited only by the creativeness and experience of the technicians and clients. If you have a specific task you think may be aided through the use of Ground-penetrating Radar, then please feel free to contact James Harrison at (780) 467-1606.
