Seldom do we know what lies beneath our feet...
Maverick Inspection Ltd. contains a number of departments, including a fully operational, well equipped and experienced Ground-penetrating Radar (GPR) department, which is able to service a number of industries.
Ground-penetrating radar is often mistakenly referred to as concrete sonar, ultrasound, x-ray or ferroscan.
Ground-penetrating radar is an economical, safe and effective solution to a number of problems related to:

Construction Industry:
- Maverick Inspection Ltd. is able to locate subsurface infrastructure prior to cutting or coring in concrete. Rebar, conduits, P.T. cables and pipes can all be located.
- Maverick can provide estimates on slab thickness prior to cuttingor demolition.
- Maverick can combine GPR with E.M. detection to identify live power lines.
- Maverick can perform concrete testing in busy environments, without evacuating other personnel, without shutting down a workspace, mall, school or hospital. (Compare GPR to Radiography)
- Maverick Inspection Ltd. personnel have years of experience working alongside construction industry professionals. We have an excellent safety record. We have the knowledge and experience to handle the work you need us to tackle.
- Occasionally, curb cocks, cleanouts and floor drains are covered with concrete during construction. Maverick has a good track record of locating these features beneath finished floors and driveways, allowing pinpoint accuracy for exposing them, rather than removal of entire sections, or slabs.
- Maverick can combine E.M. detection with Remote Visual Inspection to identify, and then locate line failures.

Oilfield, Chemical and Manufacturing Industries:
- Maverick Inspection Ltd. can gather data related to testing subsurface conditions for movement or voids prior to critical crane lifts.
- Maverick Inspection Ltd. is able to locate subsurface infrastructure prior to cutting or coring in concrete. Rebar, conduits, P.T. cables and pipes can all be located.
- Maverick has been involved in a number of projects locating buried or missing pilings and pile caps.
- Sulfur pit lids: case study
- Maverick can test for and locate and delineate landfills, or saturation/contamination plumes.
- Maverick can perform basic Underground utility locating service and can locate “untraceable” plastic, fiberglass, AC/ductile lines by combining the Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) and E.M. systems.
Maverick has been involved in multiple pipeline route selections. In some cases, we were able to locate rocky outcroppings and prevent the need for expensive and dangerous blasting. In other cases, we have worked closely with the pipeline company and archaeologists to locate undisturbed graves which lay in the path of the pipeline. By locating the gravesites with GPR, instead of with a backhoe, we were able to prevent numerous tie-ups and unplanned downtime, and we were able to preserve the goodwill of the community surrounding the deceased.
Maverick is located in Sherwood Park, just east of Edmonton, Alberta. We have provided service throughout Alberta Including Red Deer, Calgary, Slave Lake, Grande Prairie, Medicine Hat, Fort McMurray, and others. We have also provided services in British Co.umbia, Nunavut, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and is
Engineering:
Maverick has successfully been involved in the location of buried well heads, and related facilities for phase I, & phase II reclamation projects.
Maverick provides utility locating services combining GPR and E.M. utility locating prior to borehole drilling. We can perform this service indoor and outdoor in order to augment the Alberta 1st call service. We locate lines on private property, and will locate privately owned/operated lines.
Maverick can supply information which can then be used to analyze concrete structures, including providing information on concrete thickness, rebar spacing and placement, void detection, stirrup locations in beams etc.
Forensics and Archaeology
Maverick Inspection Ltd. has been involved in many projects working closely with cemeteries in order to update their records, and maximize their use of space without disturbing older unmarked graves.
Maverick has worked with archaeologists to locate building foundations and other targets of archaeological interest during pre-construction phases of oilfield projects.
Maverick Inspection Ltd. has provided information to various policing agencies regarding the use of Ground-penetrating radar for locating objects ranging from stolen goods to murder weapons and missing persons.
Maverick has performed consulting work on Documentary films, and has been involved directly on-set, and in pre-production planning.
GPR is a mature technology, with many manufacturers of specialized equipment. It is a widely acknowledged geophysical method for locating underground objects. The objects which can be located with GPR and the applications it can fulfill are primarily limited by the imagination and skill of the GPR practitioners. There are applications in:
- Mining precious metals, aggregates, and water
- Quality Assurance in construction and post construction phases
- Preventative maintenance of bridges, pedways and other structures
- Non-destructive testing of refractory for loss and thickness
- Detecting rebar delamination in concrete structures
For these, or any other application you can think of, contact James Harrison at (780) 467-1606.
