Research and Development
Maverick Inspection is often involved in Research and Development projects. This includes:
- helping clients set up equipment and procedures for in-house testing
- field-testing new inspection systems
- developing and modifying custom inspection systems
- providing data-gathering support for product or process development
- developing custom solutions for client inspection applications
We have performed these types of services using Remote Video Inspection, Groun-penetrating radar, Infrared Thermography, and other technologies.
The samples below are from some interesting infrared thermography projects.

Fire Retardant Paint Test
This image shows a a thin layer of newly developed fire retardant paint on oak laminate. The burn was conducted until the burner ran out of fuel. This image was taken after approximately 45 minutes with the burner approximately 3" away from the sample and temperatures over 800 degrees C.
This sample was burned from the bottom, painted side of the sample for 45+ minutes without burning through or discoloring the top side. Unpainted oak laminate was engulfed in flame almost immediately.

Flare Tip Emissivity Tests
This image shows both a contact and installed thermocouple being used to gather temperature data during emissivity tests of new and discolored flare tip material. The heating is not even because of the use of a torch, which was the only available heat source, and this limitation had to be accounted for in the test procedures.

|
Greenhouse Material Efficiency
This image shows the thermal transmissivity of greenhouse sheathing materials. This was part of a scan of commercial greenhouses performed in 2004 for the Alberta Research Council.

|

|
Aerial Survey for Mountain Caribou
This image is from a test flight in a Piper Super Cub in 2005. A procedure was being developed for using thermal imaging to count mountain caribou calves in various terrain from forest to meadow to glacier.

|
Measuring Temperature Differences Across Ice Surface
This image was taken during tests of ice temperature measurement as part of an in-house Research and Development project.
|
|

|
Ice Rink Coolant Leak
This image is from an early test of thermal imaging for detecting leaks in hockey arena cooling lines. A specific line was isolated and how water was introduced from each end to isolate the leaking portion.

|
Water in Aircraft Composite Material
This thermal image was taken while assisting a client in developing a method of locating water infiltration into aircraft composite material.
