Construction Applications

Western Canada’s #1 source for ground penetrating radar services

Maverick Inspection Ltd. carries a large inventory of Ground Penetrating Radar systems which are useful to the construction industry and various applications. We also have the experience, being one of the first companies in Western Canada to have obtained a GPR unit and put it to commercial use since 2001. Since obtaining the systems, we have worked daily with construction industry professionals on Greenfield construction, Brownfield construction, light commercial renovations, special projects and predictive maintenance.

How can Ground Penetrating Radar be used in the construction industry?

  • Maverick Inspection Ltd. is able to locate subsurface infrastructure prior to cutting or coring in concrete. Rebar, conduits, P.T. cables and pipes can all be located.
  • Maverick can provide estimates on slab thickness prior to cutting or demolition.
  • Maverick can combine GPR with E.M. detection to identify live power lines.
  • Maverick can perform concrete testing in busy environments, without evacuating other personnel, without shutting down a workspace, mall, school or hospital.
  • Maverick Inspection Ltd. personnel have years of experience working alongside construction industry professionals. We have an excellent safety record. We have the knowledge and experience to handle the large work projects
  • Occasionally, curb cocks, clean-outs and floor drains are covered with concrete during construction. Maverick has a good track record of locating these features beneath finished floors and driveways, allowing pinpoint accuracy for exposing them, rather than removal of entire sections, or slabs.
  • Maverick can combine E.M. detection with Remote Visual Inspection to identify, and then locate line failures

Can Ground Penetrating Radar technology scan my area?

Usually yes. We do have limitations which come with the system. First and foremost we need clear and free access to the concrete. The system works only when it is in direct contact with the surface to be inspected. No steel stud tracks, false floors, insulation, puddles of water or piles of debris. We need an appropriate amount of time, with most 24” x 24” (600 mm x 600 mm) areas taking about 20 minutes. The concrete must be cured (over 28 days old) and we need to physically be in the area scanned.

Is Ground Penetrating Radar technology 100% guaranteed?

One issue with non-destructive testing is that it is always the best estimate, based on the best information available. What we do guarantee at Maverick Inspection Ltd. is that we will provide experienced technicians, who know their job, and will be using current generation equipment which is well maintained and designed for specific tasks. By providing this level of experience and this quality of tools, we have been able to maintain an accuracy rating above 98%, tracked through customer feedback and repeat business. There is a reason we are the #1 recommended contractor for this work in a large number of the office buildings and shopping centres across Western Canada.

What are some of the applications for ground penetrating radar in concrete?

  • Bridges
  • Retaining Walls
  • Silos
  • Recreational Complexes
  • Mechanical Rooms
  • Elevator Shafts
  • Air Ducts
  • Machine Shops
  • Laboratories

Our list of other application projects include a host of shopping malls, office towers and office buildings in Edmonton, Red Deer, Calgary, Fort McMurray, the Oil Sands, as well as various hospitals, schools, transit centers and parkades. Some of the special projects we have worked on have pushed the boundaries of the GPR systems with such special requests as supplying depth of rebar coverage with +/-3 mm accuracy, among others! More common applications, such as rebar and conduit locating prior to coring through concrete slabs may previously have been performed using radiography or X-ray but our method of concrete scanning is far more convenient in most cases. With no radiation hazards, we are able to work in crowded work spaces during regular hours with no special considerations. If you can safely use your cordless phone, we can use Ground-penetrating radar.
