Radar Technology and Expertise From Footings to Roof Systems

Maverick Inspection Ltd. carries a large inventory of Ground Penetrating Radar systems which are useful to the construction industry and various applications. We also have the experience, being one of the first companies in Western Canada to have obtained a GPR unit and put it to commercial use since 2001. Since obtaining the systems, we have worked daily with construction industry professionals on Greenfield construction, Brownfield construction, light commercial renovations, special projects and predictive maintenance.

Maverick provides ground-penetrating radar (GPR) scans in Edmonton, Calgary, Red Deer, Fort McMurray, St Albert, Lloydminster, Hinton, and more.

  • Maverick Inspection Ltd. is able to locate subsurface infrastructure prior to cutting or coring in concrete. Rebar, conduits, P.T. cables and pipes can all be located.
  • Maverick can provide estimates on slab thickness prior to cutting or demolition.
  • Maverick can combine GPR with E.M. detection to identify live power lines.
  • Maverick can perform concrete testing in busy environments, without evacuating other personnel, without shutting down a workspace, mall, school or hospital.
  • Maverick Inspection Ltd. personnel have years of experience working alongside construction industry professionals. We have an excellent safety record. We have the knowledge and experience to handle the large work projects
  • Occasionally, curb cocks, clean-outs and floor drains are covered with concrete during construction. Maverick has a good track record of locating these features beneath finished floors and driveways, allowing pinpoint accuracy for exposing them, rather than removal of entire sections, or slabs.
  • Maverick can combine E.M. detection with Remote Visual Inspection to identify, and then locate line failures

Usually yes. As with all technology, there are limitations. First and foremost we need clear and free access to the concrete. The system works only when it is in direct contact with the surface to be inspected. No steel stud tracks, false floors, insulation, puddles of water or piles of debris. We need an appropriate amount of time, with most 24” x 24” (600 mm x 600 mm) areas taking about 20 minutes. The concrete must be cured (over 28 days old) and we need to physically be in the area scanned.

All electronic, remote-sensing equipment has limitations. Anyone who works with these types of instruments from equipment manufacturers to geoscientists to qualified technicians will confirm this. Anyone who claims any different is either intentionally deceptive or confused. There are situations in which GPR will not be able to detect features, and there are features which will not be detectable with radar technology.

That being said, we have tracked our success rate across Alberta from Edmonton to Red Deer, Calgary, Fort McMurray, Grande Prairie, and other centres, and it is in excess of 98%. What we can guarantee is Maverick provides the expertise and equipment you require.

Maverick’s technicians must have at least one year of experience under the supervision of senior personnel before taking on the responsibility of concrete scanning. Maverick uses a variety of systems from different manufacturers with different frequencies, even within the range of concrete imaging, in order to provide the best options for every scenario. We have in-house capabilities for repair and calibration including an electronic technologist with over a decade of experience testing and maintaining geophysical instruments at a component level.

Maverick will review any limitations pertinent to your job scope with you and make sure you understand what your best cutting or coring options are. Our technicians will tell you if there is a better technology for specific situations, whether it is one that Maverick provides such as infrared thermography, or even one we do not offer such as x-ray.

Our list of other application projects include a host of shopping malls, office towers and office buildings in Edmonton, Red Deer, Calgary, Fort McMurray, the Oil Sands, as well as various hospitals, schools, transit centers and parkades. Some of the special projects we have worked on have pushed the boundaries of the GPR systems with such special requests as supplying depth of rebar coverage with +/-3 mm accuracy, among others! More common applications, such as rebar and conduit locating prior to coring through concrete slabs may previously have been performed using radiography or X-ray but our method of concrete scanning is far more convenient in most cases. With no radiation hazards, we are able to work in crowded work spaces during regular hours with no special considerations. If you can safely use your cordless phone, we can use Ground-penetrating radar.
